Flexible Training
During Dental School
If you have responsibilities as a carer for example, you may be able to organise some flexibility into your study. Please speak to the Dean for Students at Barts (Professor Mike Roberts) who is based in the Garrod building at Whitechapel.
During Dental Foundation Training and Specialty Training
It is possible to train flexibly during Dental Foundation Training. To organise this, first apply for a DFT place and once you have been accepted, then liaise with the deanery to organise flexible working.
Employers (in this case the deanery) have a legal responsibility to take reasonable steps to accommodate flexible training needs. They also have a legal responsibility to provide maternity and paternity leave.
After completion of Training
Dentistry offers many options for flexible working once you are fully qualified. It is possible (within reason) to work part time and to chose to work the hours and days which suit you. You would obviously need to negotiate this with any potential employer, to ensure that the arrangements are suitable.
